Roles, labels and relationship expectations

A preferred role does not explain every part of a person or a relationship.

Ask what a role means in context

A role label may describe a fantasy, a style of conversation or a specific agreed context. It does not automatically apply to everyday decisions. Ask how the person uses the term, and explain your understanding without assuming that one definition is universal.

Separate interest from permission

A profile, photograph or role label is not permission to give orders, use intimate names or send explicit content. Ask whether that tone is welcome. Any agreement should be voluntary and specific, and either person can stop or change their mind without owing a replacement arrangement.

Discuss the relationship you actually want

Talk about exclusivity, time and the pace of getting acquainted. A shared role preference does not settle those questions. If expectations differ, acknowledge that early instead of promising a relationship you cannot offer. Labels are useful starting points when both people can question them.
